British Phenom Completes Shocking Run

Fernandez Falls in Straight Sets

Emma Raducanu completed the dream with a 6-4 6-3 win over Leylah Fernandez in the 2021 US Open women's singles final to become the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam title.

The 18-year-old British phenom completed a shocking run through the US Open with a straight-sets victory over Fernandez, who was also a surprise finalist.

Raducanu is the first British woman to win a Grand Slam singles title since Virginia Wade at Wimbledon in 1977.

"I can't believe I've just won the US Open," Raducanu said. "It's an amazing feeling."

Fernandez, 19, was also making her Grand Slam final debut. She was the first Canadian woman to reach the final of a Grand Slam singles event since Bianca Andreescu won the US Open in 2019.

"I'm so proud of Leylah," Raducanu said. "She's had an amazing tournament. She's a great player and I'm sure she's going to have a lot more success in the future."

The match was played in front of a capacity crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The atmosphere was electric as the two young players fought for the title.

Raducanu broke Fernandez's serve in the first game of the match and never looked back. She won the first set 6-4 and the second set 6-3.

The win is a major milestone for Raducanu, who is now the world's highest-ranked British woman.

"I'm so grateful for this opportunity," Raducanu said. "I'm going to cherish this moment for the rest of my life."

With her victory at the US Open, Raducanu has established herself as one of the most promising young players in the world. She is sure to be a force to be reckoned with in the years to come.
